Helenes of the Northwest presents

Swing Away
Swing Away, the poignant movie about a woman golfer in Greece was seen at a special showing by almost 100 people on September 24th. The movie is about family values, our ethnic culture and history, and the effort to promote a sport in Greece that will benefit future generations of children and enhance the travel industry there. This film was produced on a budget of 1.5 million dollars by those who realized their investment would most likely not return any of their investment capital. They did it because they are PROUD GREEKS who love the idea of “Paying it Forward.” FILOXINIA”
As of October 13, the movie will appear in several cities (not Seattle) around the country. It is also scheduled to be available on Video on Demand in the future. Sign up to be kept informed. Meanwhile here are a couple of “clips” from the actor, John O’Hurley who can’t say enough about his Greek experience:

Greek Music Online
If you no longer have a turntable to play Greek music, especially the old brittle 78rpms, or if your CD selection is limited, here is a way to enjoy the music on your computer or smartphone New York’s ARChive of Contemporary Music (ARC) has been preserving audiovisual materials since 1985, and a little over a year ago, it partnered with the Internet Archive to bring its Great 78 Project to the public. Along with audiovisual digitization vendor George Blood L.P. and additional volunteers, the Great 78 Project to date has put over 50,000 digitized 78rpm discs and cylinder recordings on the Internet Archive, which can be listened to in all their crackling glory.

Visit the Greeks in Washington Archive
Many have asked when Greeks in Washington will have a physical site. With over 600 items (documents, photos, and other artifacts) finding and paying for a physical space has not been a priority. Rather, the “virtual” Greeks in Washington Museum may be visited 24/7/365. While a brick-and-mortar site may be desirable, one can visit the archive “online” by selecting COLLECTIONS from the home page or going directly to the collection.
Northwest Greek Communal Calendar
With the many activities held in our Northwest Greek and Greek Orthodox community, the idea of a “communal calendar” has been suggested many times. Now, with the technology available, this can be done in a way that all organizations can view information, check the calendar to help avoid conflicts and generally coordinate our activities. Greeks in Washington has created a communal calendar and will provide this service for the Greek Community of the Northwest. The calendar can be viewed on a “read only” basis by the public. The calendar will be evaluated during this “trial” period to determine its usefulness.
